The Meaning Behind the Blue Rose

The real or original meanings of logos and brands are often often lost to history or never quite fully explained. Kodak, for example, was created to be a word that had never existed to that point. They wanted the “Kodak” brand to be unique. It still is. The mermaid in the Starbucks logo started out as a topless siren calling everyone to get coffee. She can stand alone now, fully clothed, and you know exactly who and what she represents without the word “Starbucks”. I could go on and on but the rose in my logo has a deeper and more personal meaning. And along the way, maybe this enterprise will develop to the point that the “Blue Rose” will be all I need for my calling card.

The rose itself makes perfect sense since, well, my last name is Thorn. And there has always been that association. (By the way, that song Every Rose Has Its Thorn? Yeah, I can’t stand it. It makes me cringe every time…)

But in this endeavor, in a effort to create a logo that was memorable, unique, and attractive, for me it also had to have meaning.

And this is the meaning behind the blue rose.

The Carolina Blue color has a couple of meanings to me. We were (and still are to an extent) a family immersed in youth sports. Both of my children were avid soccer players and my daughter played club soccer at a relatively high level. Her team’s kit was Carolina Blue and that color always reminds me of happy times. The marketing experts will tell you that blue is one of those colors that subconsciously makes you “feel good” when you’re shopping. Sure, we can roll with that, too.

The leaves, they’re a representation of the growth of my endeavors.

The bloom isn’t in full effect but it is healthy and growing. One day the logo will be animated and that will be cool.

As I pointed out there is an obvious association with my last name. But the stem is where the heart of the meaning lies. Each thorn represents a member of my immediate family. From left to right moving down the stem they would represent me, my late wife Carol, and my two children, Joseph and Alexandra.

My children are my support. They sit at the base of the stem helping to support me. The second thorn, representing my beloved late wife, is pointing down, only because she is no longer “with us” on our side. However, she continues to provide support from “the other side”.

And the thorn at the top would represent me. At the base of the rose, doing my best to protect it. I am nothing but alone without my family.

And there you have it.

The logo was created by a gentleman in Sri Lanka with whom I developed a professional relationship. From my written instructions he managed to render exactly what I had imagined and I am grateful to him. If you’d like to contact him he can be found on Fiverr under the handle Rohitha306.
